Finally made it!
Wow what a long 48 hours it has been... We finally made it through customs at about 9:30pm Costa Rican time (8:30 Washingting time) so at that point I had been up for about 30 hours staright, my luggage was way heavier then my noodle arms could handle so when I finally made it to San Jose I was sweaty, tired, starined my shoulder (I obviously overpacked, as both my bags got labeled "heavy" may need assistance) yet there I was with a 25lb packpack and two "heavy may need assistance" sized bags struttin through the hot Costa Rican airport! You can only imagine what a sight that was... haha!
Anyways, my travels were very smooth from San Jose to my final destination of Puntarenas, and the bus we had was air conditioned! Thank god cause at that point I thought I was going to pass out!! I made my first mistake of not drinking a drop of water all day yesterday so I was really paying for it when I was trying to go to sleep last night. When our group transportation finally arrived in Puntarenas, I was so scared because all my other friends that I had met that are in the same "USAC" group and will be studying here as well all found their families right away as they were holding signs with their host kids name, yet my name was no where to be seen! Keep in mind that my spanish vocab goes about as far as being able to ask, "Necesito ir al bano" haha so I was definitely looking a little lost. When the crowd finally started thinning out, I finally found my host mom! And it turns out her English is only a little better then my Spanish so you can imigane how our night went of trying to describe everything to each other in sign language and some spanglish words on my end! She is the sweetest lady, and she said its her goal to help my Spanish improve, so hopefully by the end of my four month stay I will be able to have a full conversaton with her in Spanish, I mean that's what "immersing yourself in the culture" is all about right?
I can't complain about my living accomidations because my room is actually very big, which I wasn't expecting! The only thing I am not used to is having no air conditioning, especially when it's 80 at night and humid as hell. You can assume it was one of the sweatiest sleep of my life! I was very happy to not see any bugs in my sleep, as I slept with my window open all night becuase I probably would have baked if not. One of the girls in the group with me sent us all a picture of a lizard crawling up her wall last night though! A lizard wouldnt bother me so much, as they keep the bugs away ;)
Meanwhile, it's currentlt 9:20 here and the party music" outside has already started playing!I'm trying to figure out how to say "I need to go to the store and buy shampoo and water" so that I can take my imfamous cold Costa Rican shower which is DEFINITELY much needed at this point as I didnt get to shower last night. It is Mother's Day here in Costa Rica and seeing as the only one in my family is a mom you can imagine we will be doing something! She told me last night that we are having a "pool party" and that she will be cooking a fiesta. I still have yet to unpack my baggage but maybe I will wait until after that cold shower so I dont pass out from the heat haha. Anyways I will keep you updated on how Mother's day goes!
Adios!
